AP 23.80 Islam – Muslim Achievements: House of Wisdom (Baghdad)

The House of Wisdom (Arabic: بيت الحكمة; Bayt al-Hikma) was a major intellectual center during the Islamic Golden Age. The House of Wisdom was founded by Caliph Harun al-Rashid (reigned 786–809) and culminated under his son al-Ma’mun (reigned 813–833) who is credited with its formal institution. Al-Ma’mun is also credited with bringing many well-known scholars to share information, ideas, and culture in the House of Wisdom. Based in Baghdad from the 9th to 13th centuries, many learned scholars including those of Jewish or Christian background were part of this research and educational institute.

This split in the religion comes down to a political and spiritual difference of opinion about who should have succeeded Muhammad after his death in 632 CE. Major tenets and beliefs are often similar between the two branches, but some important differences exist. Tensions and conflicts between Shias and Sunnis are very similar to those that have at times existed between Catholics and Protestants.

The Middle East is a region, not a continent. In a sense, it is the north-east corner of Africa, the southwestern tip of Asia, and the Arabian Peninsula. All of the countries border either the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf, or the Gulf of Oman as it goes into the Arabian Sea. The countries share a hot, dry climate influenced, in part, by nearness to the sea. All of them, except Israel, share the Islamic religion and similar cultures, though this does not keep them from conflict with each other.
