In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 9 Topic 7 of the AP World History curriculum which is set in period 6 (1900-present).

As globalization accelerated int he 20th century, it brought many blessings to the world. However, much of those blessings were concentrated in the global north at the expense of the global south. Therefore, many groups rose up to resist the effects of globalization.

A key moment in the resistance was the Battle for Seattle in which protestors tried to shut down a meeting of the World Trade Organization which they believed was making policies that hurt the developing nations of the world. Anti-globalization activists also protested organizations like International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

The main arguments of the anti-globalizationists fell into the following categories: environmental degradation, threats to national sovereignty (see Brexit), and human rights abuses. Additionally, states like China resisted globalization by cancelling its citizens’ access to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, replacing it with a state-filtered app called Weibo.
