In this video Heimler walks through two examples of government response to the Industrial Revolution.
The Ottoman Empire had become so weakened during this period that it became known as the “sick man of Europe.” Part of the sickness was a string of inept leaders. Into this vacuum stepped Muhammad Ali in Egypt and led Egypt into the Industrial Age.
The Japanese largely rejected industrialization. But after their trade barriers were forced down by the United States (and Commodore Matthew Perry) they underwent a series of reforms that included industrialization and limited westernization so they were able to protect their ancient culture. This process came to be known as the Meiji Restoration.
