For generations, West African music and oral history have been traditionally passed down through the family line of Griots (musicians, oral historians, praise singers, storytellers). It has been said when a Griot dies it’s as though a library has burned to the ground.

In Africa, music serves many purposes beyond that of entertainment. It conveys customs and traditions, history and moral code. Nearly all African music has religious roots. Rhythmic complexity is a characteristic feature of African Music.
