2.TIME MAP:

The Mongol Empire
This article deals with one of the most remarkable empires in world history. A nomadic people of central Asia who had previously made little impact on history suddenly conquered an enormous empire. This ultimately covered the whole of central Asia, Russia, China, and most of the Middle East.

It was the work of an extraordinary series of leaders and rulers, most notably Genghis Khan and his grandson, Kublai Khan.

In this video Heimler helps you understand the Mongol Empire in all its short-lived glory. In about a century, these pastoral folks from the Mongolian steppe, under the leadership of the fierce Genghis (Chinggis) Khan, established the largest land-based empire in the history of the world.

Even so, they left a relatively small cultural footprint in the world. In large part this is because whenever the Mongols invaded, they tended to adopt the practices, religions, and customs of the people they conquered.

In this video we’ll see how the Mongols fared when they invaded China and compare it to what occurred with them as they invaded Persia.

7. MOVIE TIME: Pick and enjoy either the movie or Netflix series below related to the medieval time frame:

Mongol and Marco Polo

The movies may contain adult material so be sure to watch them with your parents or guardian.  Also, be sure to focus on the visual and cultural interpretations that the movies offer (but be wary and skeptical of the over dramatization and historical inaccuracies that the movies may also contain).

The names of the Great Khans are shown in bold type. Those who founded the regional khanates are listed with their dates of rule.

After the death of Chinggis Khan in 1227, his empire was divided among his sons and grandsons. Son Ögödei succeeded Chinggis as Great Khan. Grandson Khubilai expanded the domain of the Great Khan into southern China by 1279. Grandson Hülegü was the first Il-khan in the Middle East. Grandson Batu founded the Khanate of the Golden Horde in southern Russia. Son Chagatai ruled the Chagatai Khanate in Central Asia.

Ghazan’s conversion to Islam in 1295 upset the delicate balance of power in Mongol domains. European leaders abandoned their hope of finding an Il-khan ally against the Muslim defenders in Palestine, while an alliance between the Mamluks and the Golden Horde kept the Il-khans from advancing west. This helped the Europeans retain their lands in Palestine and Syria.
