During his first state visit to former Dutch colony Indonesia, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands expressed his regret and apologies on March 10, 2020, for the excessive violence of the Dutch army during the 1945-1949 independence war in Indonesia. The royal did not express regret for the prior hundreds of years of Dutch colonial exploitation.
