GOV 26.78 Roasts! CAVEAT: This is Political!

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual event held by the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) to celebrate the First Amendment and raise money for scholarships. It is traditionally attended by the President of the United States, journalists, government officials, and celebrities.

ROAST!

Purpose and tradition –
  • A free and independent press: The dinner serves as a testament to the importance of a free press and robust news coverage of the presidency.
  • Fundraising: The main source of revenue for the WHCA, the event underwrites scholarships for aspiring journalists and funds professional journalism awards.
  • Humor and entertainment: A key feature has traditionally been a headlining speech by a comedian who “roasts” the president, with the president often delivering self-deprecating jokes in return.
  • Journalism awards: The WHCA presents awards to recognize outstanding journalism achievements in the field.
