Why It Matters

The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union stemmed from a number of factors, from mutual fear and mistrust to a desire by both superpowers to spread their influence around the world. On another level, however, the effort to contain communism reflected a basic tradition of Americans first seen in the American Revolution: standing up to tyranny and fighting for freedom.
The United States was founded on the principles of individual liberty and democratic rule. Since then, Americans have felt a special duty to promote these ideals and challenge any attempt to undermine them abroad as well as at home. In confronting the Soviet Union, Americans believed they were carrying on a long tradition of battling oppression and despotism.
